Finnish Geologian tutkimuskeskus (GTK) announced the finding of a 238.3-gram meteorite (66 x 60 x 30 mm) by Pekka Vallimies at location 63\u00b024.382’N, 30\u00b004.227’E on 30 May 2017 while looking for mushrooms (Gyromitra esculenta) in L\u00f6p\u00f6nvaara<\/a>, ~10 km NNE of Lieksa, North Karelia, Finnland. The meteorite has been analysed by Kari A. Kinnunen from the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK). Information had been submitted to the Nomenclature Committee of the Meteoritical Society and on 29 May 2023 the meteorite fall was added to the Meteoritical Bulletin as Lieksa<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

At the end of September 2017 Jarmo Moilanen and Pekka Kokko found two other specimens:<\/p>\n

Lieksa 2:
\ntwo pieces of one specimen, 33.6 g + 3.7 g = 37.3 g, 33mm, found by Jarmo Moilanen on 23 September 2017<\/p>\n

Lieksa 3: 94 grams, 49mm, found by Pekka Kokko on 23 September 2017<\/p>\n

The meteorites were found about a hundred yards apart from each other and apparently about one mile from the first find. They were found with metal detectors about 5 cm deep in the soil. On 30 May 2018 the Museum of Natural History in Kumpula received the first Lieksa meteorite (6.6 cm, 238 grams) for its collection. The meteorite is exhibited within the meteorite collection inside the Kumpula Manor.<\/p>\n
