[Žd’ár nad Sázavou] A second meteorite (39.3 grams) of the Czech bolide on 9 December 2014 was found near Vatín on January 12 by Czech astronomers, first meteorite classified as type L3.9
A second meteorite with a weight of 39.3 grams was found around noon on 12 January 2015 by astronomers of the Czech Astronomical Institute (Astronomický ústav Akademie věd České republiky (AsÚ)) according to Czech television (České televize (ČT1), 12 January 2015, 19:00 CET). The meteorite was found by the astronomer Tomáš Henych near the village Vatín (~ 49°31’15.19″N, 15°58’13.17″E, 5 km southeast of Žďár nad Sázavou) after only 20 minutes of searching only 19 meters away from Dr. Jiří Borovička and Dr. Pavel Spurný’s calculated fall location for a meteorite of this weight. The meteoroid’s largest detonation that produced thousands of smaller fragments happened at an altitude of 36.4 km. It took between 5.5 (for meteorites with a weight of 40 g) and 8 minutes (for meteorites with a weight of 6 g) to fall to the ground at a speed of 30 to 40 m/s. The strewn field is up to 30 km long and 4 km wide.
On 10 January Dr. Jakub Haloda and his wife Dr. Patricie Halodová of the Czech Geological Survey classified the first found meteorite as a chondrite of type L 3.9.
Spurný favors the name Žd’ár nad Sázavou (Žd’ár for short)*.
