Northwest Africa Reboot! (13 Feb 2015)
The Nomenclature Committee has changed its Guidelines concerning meteorites from northwest Africa. Meteorites submitted with geographic coordinates will now be named using a system of Dense Collection Areas (DCAs), like in other deserts around the world. Meteorites with unknown coordinates will still be named Northwest Africa (NWA), but this generic name will no longer be restricted to Morocco and adjacent parts of other countries. Meteorites suspected of coming from anywhere in Morocco, Western Sahara, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, or Mali may now be named NWA. NWA meteorites named under the new rules will be numbered starting with NWA 10001.”
